  2. UNDP, with funding from the Government of Japan, recently launched a new programme that uses an innovative approach to climate change adaptation in Africa. Under this programme, UNDP will assist 21 African countries in implementing integrated and comprehensive adaptation actions and resilience plans. The programme, entitled Supporting Integrated and Comprehensive Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation in Africa, has a budget of US$92.1 million over three years. It will fund national activities supported by regional services.

The effects of climate change will constrain the ability of developing countries to reach their sustainable development objectives under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As the UNDP mission includes safeguarding the MDGs, its Strategic Plan makes a commitment to integrating adaptation to climate change in all UNDP work.
  5. UNDP launched an initiative on Community Monitoring & Preparedness for Natural Disasters, COMPREND. Established in September 2004, this new global initiative promotes activities that catalyze environmental monitoring and preparedness efforts at the local community level for earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and severe weather disasters. Founded on south-south cooperation, i.e., collaboration between developing countries, COMPREND is a global program that encourages the sharing of community disaster experiences and advances in forecasting technologies. In 2007, COMPREND continues its efforts on the grass-root level, focusing on Asian communities such as those in the Philippines, China, and India.
  6. Small communities are often the most severely affected, yet the least equipped to cope with the impacts of climate change. In recognition of this, the UNDP-GEF Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) project pilots the community component of the GEF Strategic Priority on Adaptation, building the resilience of communities and the ecosystems upon which they rely in the face of climate change impacts.
  7. The Pacific Disaster Net is a web-based portal that will help to link disaster management specialists and resources throughout the Pacific region. It will directly help National Disaster Management Offices and all disaster risk management stakeholders to improve knowledge management, planning and decision-making.
